Casimir Jones' Participation at 2025 BIO* International Convention
Casimir Jones was honored to participate in a vibrant panel discussion moderated by Lisa Mueller, JD, at the 2025 BIO International Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. The session, titled “Fueling Innovation: Strategies for Funding Academic Spin Outs“, brought together respected leaders from university technology transfer offices and the venture community to examine the unique funding landscape for early-stage biotech startups emerging from academic research.
Biotech startups originating in academic settings are driving some of the most transformative advancements in science and medicine today. Yet, translating these discoveries into market-ready products requires not only breakthrough ideas but also significant financial investment and strategic support. Early-stage university spin-outs often face serious challenges in accessing the right type of funding at critical junctures. The panel featured in-depth discussions about the variety of funding pathways available—including venture capital, angel investment, and corporate partnerships—with panelists sharing practical insights about identifying and securing resources at pivotal moments in a startup’s growth.
A major focus resided on the evolving role of universities beyond traditional research support. Panelists described how academic institutions offer seed funding, specialized incubator spaces, and intellectual property guidance, acting as key catalysts in commercializing scientific breakthroughs. They emphasized the importance of university-driven networks for fostering industry relationships and accelerating the journey from lab to market.
Panelists also addressed the persistent obstacles encountered by spin-out companies. They shared strategies for overcoming barriers such as capital acquisition, sourcing effective mentorship, and scaling organizational operations. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the tools and tactics required to navigate these challenges and were provided with actionable approaches that can be implemented within their own ventures.
The distinguished panelists at this session included:
Nichole Mercier, PhD | Assistant Vice Chancellor & Managing Director, Washington University in St. Louis; President and Co-Founder, Equalize Inc |
Mike Partsch, MBA | Chief Venture Officer, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) |
Marc Sedam, MBA | Vice President, Technology Opportunities & Ventures, NYU Langone Health |
Simon Warner, PhD | Head of Licensing and Ventures, Oxford University Innovation |
